In
1954, the United States Central Intelligence Agency sponsored a
coup of democratically elected Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz
Guzman.
In
the years following the coup, between 1954 and 1990, the Guatemalan
military, with the support of the United States Government almost
entirely throughout, maintained a campaign of repression.
Between
1954 and 1990, 200,000 Guatemalans were killed, mostly indigenous
Mayans.
Why
was the United States involved?
